Every year on #GivingTuesday (the Tuesday following Thanksgiving), we partner with a local organization to raise funds for their mission. This year, we are honored to join Uluhaʻo o Hualālai, a Kona-based nonprofit focused on engaging families in the stewardship of Mount Hualālai’s natural and cultural resources for generations to come. On Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, we are donating 20% of our online and in-store sales to Uluhaʻo o Hualālai.

The Mission of Uluha’o:

To engage families in the stewardship of Hualālai’s natural and cultural resources for generations to come. Uluha’o gives preference to groups whose purpose of applying and objectives align with their mission.

A Goal to Educate

One of Uluhaʻo o Hualālai's education based priorities is to recover and perpetuate Kona-based knowledge and practices through mālama ʻāina (caring for the land), moʻolelo (myth, story), and 'mele (chant, song). This community connectedness is the passion of Uluha’o, and it runs alongside their efforts to enhance the native forest ecosystems by removing aggressive invasive species, while propagating and out-planting select native species. 

We reached out to Uluha’o’s Executive Director, Keolani Keawe to share with you what they’ve been up to this year. Here are her own words:

“This year we serviced several programs of youth from Kona who participated in mālama ʻāina projects including removal of invasive species, seed collection and reforestation efforts of planting over 1200 Koa seedlings and other native plants. We continue to engage connections with people of Kona to foster cultural and natural education of Hualālai mountain and its unique eco system.”

“Throughout the year we hold workshops that include; "art with invasiveʻs: picking pine cones and painting for holiday use, wreath making using invasive plants, seed collection, propagation and planting. Each program day includes cultural and natural protocol, Plant identification and mālama ʻāina.”

On Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, we are donating 20% of our online and in-store sales to Uluhaʻo o Hualālai.
